FAQ · 25 questions
Everything people ask before they walk in.
If yours isn't here, text (818) 538-4989. A coach replies, not a call center.
Am I the right person?
Am I too old for this?
No. A lot of the room is 35 to 55, and the oldest people on the mat are the ones who tap early and train the longest. Leverage beats strength; that's the whole point of the art. You set the pace on every round.
I'm out of shape. Do I need to get fit first?
Nobody gets in shape first. Warm-ups scale to you, coaches tell you to sit out a round before you'd ever need to ask, and 30 days of showing up is how people get in shape here.
Will I get hurt?
Injuries happen in every sport; the room is built to make them rare. "Tap early, tap often" is the rule, new people are paired with careful partners, and nobody spars on day 1.
Do I have to spar on day 1?
No. Your first class is 1 position and 1 escape with a partner who knows you're new. Sparring comes when a coach says you're ready, usually in the second or third week.
I trained years ago. Where do I start?
All Levels, not Fundamentals. Tell the coach at your intro lesson what you remember; they'll move you up or down after a week. The First 30 is the same $100 either way.
I'm a woman. Who will I train with?
Careful partners, chosen by the coach, and other women: 45 of 175 members were women in November 2025. There's a women's changing room with showers.
Do you do MMA or striking?
No. 100% no-gi jiu jitsu, no punches, no kicks. If you want striking, text us and we'll point you to a gym that does it well.
What is "no-gi"?
Jiu jitsu without the kimono. Rashguard and shorts, the way you'd actually be dressed. It's faster, it's what MMA fighters use, and it's the only thing we teach.
Your first class
Do I need a gi? Is it included?
No gi, ever. You need a rashguard and it's included in the First 30; it's yours on day 1 and yours if you leave.
What do I wear?
Your rashguard, athletic shorts with no pockets or zippers, and nothing else: no shoes on the mat, no jewelry, nails trimmed. Bring water.
What happens in the first 10 minutes?
A coach meets you at the door by name with your rashguard. You wipe your feet, bow on, warm up with the class, and the coach pairs you for the first drill. Nobody is thrown into a round.
Can I watch a class before I join?
Yes. The lobby looks onto the mat. Come any class time, no appointment. Adults usually find that 30 minutes of watching answers more than a phone call.
Can I watch my kid?
Yes, every class, from the lobby. Parents stay; coaches give feedback in the last 10 minutes.
Hygiene and nail rules?
Nails trimmed short, clean rashguard every class, wipe your feet at the station before you step on, no bare feet off the mat, no training sick. Coaches will send you home for any of these and won't be shy about it.
Showers and towels?
Yes. Showers with towel service, changing rooms with cubbies (including a women's room), coffee bar, and a vending machine.
Money and rules
How much does it cost?
Adults start with the First 30: $100, 2 classes a week for 30 days, rashguard included. After that, unlimited is $220 every 4 weeks, month to month, $0 enrollment if you continue. Kids are $200 every 4 weeks plus a one-time $100 enrollment; 2 kids are $330 plus $170 enrollment. The 6-Week Course is $599 or $699. Everything is on the pricing page.
Why only 2 classes a week?
Because 2 a week is what a beginner can keep for 30 days straight, and keeping it is what the first month is for. Going 5 times in week 1 and 0 times in week 3 is how people quit. 8 classes in 30 days is what the training calendar is built around; once you're a member you can add a 3rd.
What if I miss classes during the First 30?
The 30 days keep running. Make the class up on another day that week if you can. If you land under 8, the only thing you miss is the credit, and the membership price is the same $220.
What happens after day 30?
You decide. Stay, and it's $220 every 4 weeks with $0 enrollment ($120 the first month if you made all 8 classes). Leave, and you keep the rashguard. Nobody calls.
Is there a contract?
No. Month to month, 4 weeks at a time. Paid-in-full 3- and 6-month plans exist for people who want them, and those are non-refundable but can be paused for injury.
How do I pause?
14 days' written notice by email, up to 60 days, and it resumes on its own at 60. Injury pauses are the same 60 days.
How do I cancel, and what does it cost?
30 days' written notice by email. Cancelling inside that 30-day window is a flat $100 per membership. Outside it, nothing.
Are there refunds?
No, and there's nothing to refund: the First 30 comes with a rashguard you keep, and memberships are month to month. Making all 8 classes in 30 days is the guarantee.
Do you take Wellhub?
Yes. Drop-ins for visiting grapplers are $40 and Sunday open mat is open to everyone.
The building
Where do I park and which door do I use?
3 spots directly behind the building, free street parking on Vista Del Monte, metered on Van Nuys Blvd. Don't park at the neighbors. Use the rear entrance; the front door stays locked during class.

| Bought separately | $504 | |
| The First 30 | $100 | |
$504 is what these cost bought separately. The First 30 is $100 because the goal is the 30 days, not the sale. It's 2 classes a week on purpose: that's the pace a beginner can keep, and keeping it is what the first 30 days are for.
Make all 8 classes and it pays for itself.
The First 30 is 2 classes a week, 8 in 30 days. Make all 8 and if you continue, the $100 you paid is credited to your first month of membership: $120 instead of $220. 2 a week is the pace a beginner can actually keep for a month, so the target isn't a hoop, it's the point.
There is no refund, and there is nothing to refund. If day 30 comes and this isn't for you, you keep the rashguard, you keep the guide, you keep the calendar, and you don't come back. No exit call, no fee, no "let's talk about why." We'd rather you leave with a rashguard than stay on a contract. The only way to get the $100 back is to make all 8 classes, and at that point most people don't want it back.
