01 — The Reason This Exists

You've thought about trying jiu-jitsu.

Maybe for months. Maybe for years.

Every time you looked into it, something stopped you.

  • The gym looked intimidating.
  • You felt you needed to get in shape first.
  • You didn't want to be the only beginner.

That fear is the reason most people never start. It's also the reason this program exists.

You will not be the only beginner. Everyone starts on the same day, from the same spot, with the same nerves. And in six weeks, you'll all know exactly what to do when someone tries to put you on the ground.

02 — Your Coach
Mike Frausto — Head Coach, New Ground Jiu Jitsu

Meet Your 6-Week Coach

Mike Frausto

The beginners program is built on three questions:

  1. Can you control someone?
  2. Can you defend and escape bad situations?
  3. Can you stay safe with strikes?

If yes to all three — that's real jiu-jitsu. Everything else is a bonus.

The 6-Week Beginners Program was built for the people who almost didn't walk through the door.

I had an amazing experience at New Ground Jiu Jitsu. I had always been interested in trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but I was honestly pretty nervous and hesitant about starting. When I found out they offered a 6-week Fundamentals Program, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to give it a shot.

From day one, every coach was incredibly welcoming, personable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping beginners learn. They created an environment where asking questions and making mistakes felt completely normal, which made learning so much less intimidating.

Extremely good vibes at New Ground! The mat and facilities are immaculate, and the coaches are experienced and attentive during class. As a newcomer to the sport I was intimidated, but the staff, coaches, and members at New Ground made me feel welcome, safe and supported.

Clean, quality mat space, really great vibes! This will be my fifth BJJ school and I am super excited to start training no-gi only. Nobody needs the gi. Mike is a super nice guy, very approachable and very helpful.

One of my good friends is starting BJJ here as a complete beginner and I'm excited for her to go through their beginner program.

Graduates of the 6-Week Beginners Program earn a Specialty rate. Forever.

$390
Saved every year you keep training

At 12 months, the program has paid for itself.

At 24 months, you've saved more than the All Access tier costs.

Most people who finish the six weeks are still training a year later. Once you know what you're doing, it's hard to stop.

Note

You can split the cost into 4 interest-free payments with Klarna at checkout. The Specialty rate savings cover most of that within the first year.

09 — Before You Book

Questions people ask.

I've genuinely never done anything like this. Am I going to be the only person who doesn't know what they're doing?
Every person in the class is starting on the same day, in the same spot, knowing nothing. That's the whole point of starting together. You won't be behind, because there's nothing to be behind on. The class is designed for zero-experience beginners.
I'm not in great shape. Is that going to be a problem?
No. Jiu-jitsu is a skill-based sport, not a strength sport. The first six weeks are about learning positions, movements, and fundamentals — not out-conditioning anyone. People finish the program in better shape than they started, but you don't need to be in shape to start.
What's "no-gi"? Do I need to buy a gi?
No-gi jiu-jitsu is trained in a rashguard (a fitted athletic shirt) and shorts — no traditional uniform. It's faster-paced and closer to how jiu-jitsu is used in wrestling, MMA, and self-defense. New Ground is a no-gi-only academy. You will not need to buy or maintain a gi. Your rashguard and shorts are included in the program.
How often are the classes?
Twice a week, for six weeks — that's the 12 classes included in the program. If you go with All Access ($699), you can also attend any of the regular schedule classes during those six weeks.
What if I miss a class?
Every technique from every class is also in the on-demand video curriculum. If you miss a class, you can catch up before the next one. And you can ask any of the coaches directly — they check in with you throughout the six weeks.
What if I sign up and it's not for me?
Talk to your coach at the orientation. If it isn't the right fit, they'll say so. The point of the orientation is to figure that out before you commit.
What if I've trained a little bit before?
The booking form will ask about your previous experience. If you've trained before but consider yourself a beginner, that's fine — your coach will use the orientation to figure out the right starting point for you. This program is designed for zero-experience beginners, so if you've trained meaningfully before, the coach may point you toward a different track that's a better fit.
Where is the gym?
4617 Van Nuys Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403. Serving Van Nuys, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, Encino, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, Valley Village, Northridge, Lake Balboa, and Burbank.
